Although embryonic stem cell research is considered to have a series of positive benefits, it still is very controversial. Well, here are some pros and cons concerning embryonic stem cell research, and after all it is not only a matter of preference on whether you think it will have some positive effects or not, but mostly if the advantages that embryonic stem cell research can bring are more important than the disadvantages.
So, although many people seem to be against embryonic stem cell research, it continues to be a main activity for many specialists, all over the world, and the findings they managed to come to in this area seem to have helped many domains, at least when it comes to medicine and discovering treatments for serious diseases. Within the United States, for many years there has been a federal ban when it comes to funding embryonic stem cell research. In 2009, President Barack Obama decided to lift that ban and so, since that moment embryonic stem cell research has been increased. The reason why the previous US President, George Bush, decided to issue a limitation for the embryonic stem cell research was linked to ideological grounds. Anyway, since 2009, embryonic stem cell research has pretty much been increased and more Americans began supporting it.
Why is embryonic stem cell research so much debated? Well, there are some controversial aspects linked to it and there also are some believes that indicate embryonic stem cell research could bring new cures to serious conditions that cannot easily be treated today. So, specialists seem to believe that embryonic stem cell research is the key in finding potential cures for conditions such as cancer, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, heart diseases and many other rare conditions and genetic disorders. And since more than 100 million Americans suffer from diseases as the ones already mentioned, life threatening conditions that cannot easy be cured, it seems that embryonic stem cell research really is worth. When it comes to the cons against embryonic stem cell research, the most debated aspects are linked to the fact that the process supposes the destruction of the blastocyst, meaning the laboratory-fertilized human egg. So, some people consider the procedure to be a crime against human life, considering the whole process immoral.
